Harness Education & Rehoming Opportunities was launched in July 2015 as a joint initiative of Harness Racing Victoria and the State Government via the Victorian Racing Industry Fund.
Each partner contributes equal financial support to the project which is a key component of HRV’s 2020 Strategic Plan.
HERO creates positive pathways for Standardbreds exiting the racing environment, catering both for horses which have concluded their career - successful or unsuccessful - and those which do not make it to the track.
HERO works directly with the harness racing industry, its breeders, owners, trainers and drivers. The Program is not a Standardbred rescue.
Its focus is the facilitation of opportunities for Standardbreds to transition from racing, race training or breeding for racing - to appropriate long-term retirement homes, primarily as ridden or pleasure harness horses.
Since HERO’s inception, the support from all sectors of the harness racing community has been extraordinary, not only those involved with the hands-on care and training of horses, but also sponsors, administrators and kindred bodies.
As a result, more Victorian Standardbreds than ever before are being placed into loving life after racing homes.
